Hey guys, I found this one today. It has a mirror shine in the fields, but I don't see that "frost" look on the devices. Can you tell?

Yes. That's a proof. Back in the day, the cameo contrast of the dies were quickly worm away so the majority of these proofs don't have that frost.

The mirrored fields are the best indicator but also notice the sharp squared rims and strong strike details. Compare the edge of a proof vs. the edge of a business strike, the proof will appear to be thicker due to the rim being fully formed.

That's a proof.

I got lots of proofs when I was a manager for several video arcades back in the late 70s and early 80s. Most of the time around Christmas. I'd find the quarters in the games, the cracked cases in the trash and the kids would bring the Ikes, SBAs, Kennedys, Dimes and Nickels to the counter and ask for more quarters.

All the kids saw was coins for Pac-Man.

Nice proof nickel.
Maybe you should try acetone on it - there seems to be a fingerprint to the left of Jefferson!

::edit:: I really should't be confused about which way is left or right....

Excellent!

I have a bad feeling that I've missed a number of proofs while roll searching. Is there a reference that helps one identify various proofs for the various denominations throughout the years? Or is it something you just have to develop an eye for?

Did you check for a doubled die? I like the 1960-64 proofs for their beauty.

There is a finger print on the obverse. You might want to acetone it to removed it before it become permanent?

How can you tell the earlier proofs from really nice business strikes?

Since I found it in a roll, I'm pretty sure that fingerprint is permanent. But I might try it anyway.
