From a yard sale this morning. Pictured and described from best to worst.

First, an 1897 with some small gouges, probably rates an AU-50 Details grade.

Next, a 1921-S, some detail remains in the cotton bolls, so XF-40 I'd say (and even is it's VF-35, that'd hardly affect its value). Small bit of yellow gunk at the back of Liberty's hair and between two denticles that I'll have to get after with a toothpick.

Finally, the most worn, but maybe the most interesting. A 1901-O, fits the VG-10 criteria, perhaps F-15 if the grader tied one on the night before, but even in this condition there are two obvious die cracks on the reverse, one spanning from "T" to "T" in "STATES" and the other running from above the "O" in "OF" all the way through the eagle's wing tip to at least the "M" and maybe even as far as the "E" in "AMERICA". I haven't scrambled to see if there's a documented die state for these, as I can't imagine that they'd enhance its worth much unless it was in mint state,(and likely not even then).

They weren't out. I mentioned that I'd buy old coins, and they were then brought out.

I might have to reconsider my desire to sleep in on Saturdays and attend some sales.

Nice, I have tried several yard sales during the past year (about 25?) but no luck on coins. Did manage a couple of old knives though. When I do make a point to stop at one I try to remember to carry a copy of a Red Book if we need to haggle on price.

You would be suprised how many coins end up at garage sales, either out by jewelery or like you said, mention it to them. I bought a dozen Large Cents from a lady for $30, she was happy, and I got a 1822 and a 1828 I needed!!
