I thought this was a really high dollar coin, but I saw this coin in an auction for only a couple hundred bucks with only a day worth of bidding left.

No 1856 FEC should be bought as raw. One of the cases where slabbing is necessary.
I vote fake.

I think its a fake.

The date looks odd, a slightly different font. I would stay away from one not graded. The one I find online is Genuine,EF Details,Cleaned going for $12,000

The font on the date is way to large.

I agree with thw others the coin is a fake. Aside from the font, the eagle's head is also slightly off the original deaign and the coin retains way too much luster for this grade, furthermore the uneven wear between the reverse and obverse is obverse is sign of counterfeiting.

Is the head to skinny? I am not sure what is different about the eagles head, but that might be what I am seeing.

If someone was going to drop alot of money on a 1856, you'd think they'd know exactly what they look like, right? Even if you didn't know, just a couple seconds of looking at a side by side with a genuine 1856 would be all you need. It would be downright ridiculous to blame anybody but the buyer IMHO.

I did not purchase the coin just came across it when I was browsing an auction. I could never afford one and a big red light went off when I saw this one for $200 with one day of bidding left. I own a 1857 and 1858 (well-worn for sure) and realized that there isn't even a slot in my folder for a 1856. lol

The date is the biggest giveaway. I also notice the legends aren't the right style for 1856.

If someone owned an 1856 Flying Eagle cent in MS condition, this one is likely MS63, then it would be:

A. Slabbed by PCGS or NGC
B. NOT in a Cardboard 2x2 [Edit: especially not a torn, dingy one]
C. NOT on ebay for a few hundred dollars. Likely on Heritage for tens of thousands.

Whether it looks real or not, something just wouldn't be right...

As stated, this is a coin you NEVER buy raw..I don't care how reputable the person selling it is.
As for this coin, yes it's fake.
The numerals of the date are all wrong and too large.

That buyer paid $4700 to learn some very, very important lessons!
