I called PCGS today to ask why my recent submission was 'refused' 'retuned to sender.' It transpires that my valuable submission had been opened or was open and had thus been summarily rejected by PCGS without inspection. So I now have to wait for my envelope to get back to the UK to see if all my coins have been stolen. Despite using AirSure, a tracked and insured service if they have been stolen the insurance might cover 40% of contents. In the 5 years I've been sending coins to the US from the UK this has never happened before.

Possibly opened for inspection by U.S. Customs?

I was gonna say too maybe it was customs. Here's hoping that all your coins are still there. Keep us posted.

I had a package I mailed to PCGS manhandled by USPS, and when it arrived, PCGS didn't take the chance that it had been tampered with and returned to sender... All the coins were fine, the package just looked like the post office had dragged it for a couple of miles down a bed of gravel, but it still cost me $30 worth of wasted shipping and an hour conversation that went no where with USPS... From what I understand, PCGS just does not take any chances with packages that look like they may have been tampered with...

I am hoping this is the case as the insurance would not cover a total loss......and also 9 days the get there and 9 days back and then the hassle of sending them back again.....still, customs is better than theft...

Marbury, it was most likely opened by US customs. When we ship to the US services from Canada we always (as ugly as it seems) put "numismatic items for research and expertise to be returned to sender not for resale" on the package . No problems since the beginning. I had to go to Canada Customs one time to clear a package sent back from Anacs but it was a mere 15 bucks processing fee . Hope all your stuff gets back safely. Just a pile of agro to you though!

All coins STOLEN..............empty envelope delivered today....$1300 lost...........informed that insure is £50...and the UK POSTOFFICE does not offer insurance for high sums anyway.......this is a hobby changing experience as I will not be able to send coins for slabbing again. I am absolutely gutted.

Very sorry to learn of that development.

Assume other than the limited insurance you have no other recourse to recoup some of your costs?

Feeling for you ... I as well would be devastated.

That's crazy, I'm so sorry to hear that! Wow, that's really horrible, I can't even imagine! I can't believe UK Post won't insure to a higher amount for more valuable packages, that just seems wrong...and seems like they're loosing business as I'm sure many people don't use the mail for exactly these reasons... I for one would avoid sending any sort of valuable package without insurance. Again, I'm really sorry, that's truly horrible, I can't even imagine!

I did get insurance but when asked how much the extra insurance was I declined as £250 was a waste of time when package is worth 600 pounds......went to post office and the postmaster said, in a jolly voice.....you are not having much luck today! I could have screamed! Total insurance for AirSure tracked and signed for £50! I cannot even see me bothering to claim.

Yea UK based but doesn't hold much gravitas internationally..........also, why would a thief steal the submission form too? Don't suppose there is any hope....
