I wonder if it wasn't taped up somewhere. The reverse was protected, as was the portion of the obverse under the tape, while the remainder of the obverse sustained environmemtal damage. Just a thought, because I can't come up with anything more plausible.

Lucky Cuss's thoughts are in line with what I was thinking too.

As mentioned above, this coin was apparently "secured" in an album or board which caused the toning pattern. The unprotected area has reached terminal state of toning (black) and there may have been an attempt to remove it on the chin/neck area. Result is AU details.

Mid AU for me. That toning is very distracting for me.

Id say tape, or a rubber band. This was a very common way to hold coins together in norway, back in the late 1880's. The end coins often show a sign of this, with a cross or in this case a thick stripe where there is light, or no toning at all. Some like it, others don't.
As far as the grade goes, Low AU

I think dave700x is right on the money with his assessment.

I agree. Its almost like 4 different coins counting the reverse. I kinda like it though. I definitely don't have one like it and it makes for an interesting conversation piece. Again, thanks for the responses and opinions everyone.
