Novice here. How do you know it is a counterfeit? I ask because I have a 1923 and 1925 that my Dad left for me; fortunately he built his collection back in the 60's so I am pretty sure mine are authentic, but it would be nice for future reference. Thanks in advance.

Is it odd that the last 15 feedbacks on his sales have to do with 1923 and 1925 small cents? I don't deal with ebay but just a thought.....

The shape of the lettering is wrong, especially the date. The coins have a "ghostly" look to them, particularly the obverse. Weak details, almost a white highlight look to the raised areas. Here are larger photos of the same types of fakes, 1925 and 1926 nickels. 1925 fake 5 cents 1926 fake 5 cents

Lots of reasons I would hesitate to buy any of these coins. The pics are all very poor quality, thats the first red flag for me. Good pics sell themselves. So have you reported him?

Yes, I have. More people reporting it will help get rid of these counterfeit coin listings faster though. It is becoming a major problem in US numismatics, and now Canadian as well.

Reporting is a game. Does ebay ever kick off a seller for repeatedly violating the law and their policy? Maybe it's time for the Canadian government to give ebay a bloody nose and public embarrassment. Arrest an executive the next time they come to Canada. It won't go anywhere, but it would send a clear message.

Looking at the 1925 & 1926 nickels, what are the letters or numbers supposed to look like. I recently bought a 1925, 1926 (near) & 1926 (far) in VF condition. I paid $250.00 for them so I'm a bit concerned now that I may have been swindled. I looked at another example on the net and it appeared the numbers were thicker (wider) in the fake coins shown above. Is that the main tip off. That they appear with a white hue or whatever could mean they were photographed in poor light. What's a definite test to tell for sure the coins I have are legitimate?

We report counterfeit and/or not properly marked copy coins. More often than not, they do not get removed. ebay has a problem in that they do not have the expertise to judge one way or the other whether the item is fake or real. You're asking some CSR in California to take your word for it based on an electronic complaint. In situations like this where many people ban together something is generally done but it's more an exception than the rule. On off complaints generally don't result in a removal. ebay should consider some sort of an "expert panel" system where complaints of this nature are vetted through 2 or 3 subject matter experts. These could be active ebay members who look at the item and feed opinion back to ebay who can take appropriate action.

Better than 95% of the ones I report get removed.
You have to send an explanation, you can't just say "this is a fake" and expect them to take your word for it. I often link to proof here.
