I'm back with another question asking if a coin is original or cleaned. I'm still working on how to determine this. This Seated Liberty Half has some lines on the obverse, but I'm not sure if they are cleaning lines, just something on the surface or from the strike. The reverse looks nice, but it's one of those examples of the coin looking really nice, so nice I suspect it has been cleaned. Let me know what you think. Thanks, http://www.ebay.com/itm/1877-Seated...em48669a9acePaul Bulgerin

Seriously hairlined, the seller admits as much- Quote: This coin was no doubt a GEM BU Proof Like coin, but someone long ago took a cloth a lightly wiped it. Since the coin is blast white, you can assume it has been dipped as well. Then you are left wondering whether the cleaner dipped the coin for too long, tried to remove too much toning/tarnish, or if the dip was even rinsed off. "Dip", in this case, refers to commercial coin cleaner(E-Z-Est, Jeweluster, etc) composed of thiourea and sulfuric acid.

The streaks on the obverse are really painful for me to look at. I say absolutely cleaned for this one. I don't like how the surfaces look unnaturally clean.

Looks like a BU coin that got a wipe. I would not make the automatic presumption that it was dipped.

Almost looks whizzed. Somebody got burned.

Those definitely are NOT Mint die polish lines on the obverse. They continue from the left right into Liberty. Dipping is the least of that coin's problems.

Harshly polished; I can see hairlines all over that UNC-details coin. You should be careful with raw, supposedly "pristine" coins like this sold on ebay. There's a reason that they aren't slabbed.

Cleaned. I tell my customers 95% of raw coins have been cleaned

The seller admits no such thing and just claims it was "lightly wiped" with a cloth. I'm not saying for sure whether the coin was harshly cleaned or not, but if it was harshly cleaned then the seller is lying about it by saying it was only lightly wiped.

The hairlines on the obverse indicate a significant cleaning ... regardless of what the seller states.
Someone overpaid for this coin IMHO

Yes barryg, the seller did indeed admit that the coin had been cleaned as that is the point of wiping a coin. The degree of hairline damage is in question but my point is that most sellers do not even mention a cleaning or hairlines.
