Regular contributors to the forum recognize my interest in honest surfaces low-ball coins ... admittedly a somewhat fringe collecting interest ... but the search for these coins brings me great joy from the hobby.

True low-ball coins are not as easy as it may seem ... and finding honest surfaces, non-molested examples adds an additional challenge to the numismatic hunt.

I'm perhaps best known in the low-ball world for my quest of a circulated classic silver commemorative type set ... and that long running thread is active in that sub-forum.

Writing today to share a great find that brings me great collecting joy ... the first and only Walking Liberty half dollar certified as PO01 by PCGS.

I started an earlier post describing my 1921-D Walker ... PCGS FR02 ... and we all agreed that PCGS would likely never certify a PO01 Walker as the nature of the coins design is such that the perimeter legends survive well beyond the date/mm wearing away.

You can view that earlier thread here:

Today I am thrilled to share that PCGS has certified my 1918-S Walker as PO01 ... photo of the coin:

The coin in PCGS holder ...

The-Ultimate-Low-Ball-Walker-...-PCGS-PO-1

To put this coin into rarity perspective ... PCGS has certified 354,900 Walkers ... of those a total of 101 Walkers have been certified a FR02.

In the entire history of PCGS ... there is now only one (1) PO01 Walker ... across the entire 65 coin series. That PO01 is my 1918-S.

That knowledge brings me great collecting joy and a true sense of accomplishment ... not everyday that you get to own the ultimate coin for any series ... albeit a low-ball.

Enjoy ... comments welcome.

David

BTW ... believe I am now at 4,000 posts.

Does that result in a negative POP-1 David? Great accomplishment... It's really all about the hunt after all isn't it? PG

Maybe they guessed, or that's what he put on the form to fill out.

Now there's a population of... well, 1.

That's truly impressive. Congrats! (no price guide value for it, yet!)

It's strange to me that TPGs will slab error coins as "No date", but refuse to slab other coins as such. Congrats on the cool coin though, definitely the ultimate lowball right there!

You can see part of the "8" in the date. That's good enough for me to say it is what it is.

Wow! Learned something new today that I never considered. I still couldn't see a date, but obviously PCGS could. Congrats

That's really cool to have the only one! Congrats. What is your interest in low ball coins? I don't collect them but would assume its all about the character a coin develops after years of history going by.
