My first George VI penny with some red on it! And found in a roll beside a 1942 wheat, no less! Great rolls in the bank today, 3 George VIs in 7 rolls (1 in the first roll, 2 in the 2nd roll, nothing that great in the next 5 rolls) and also they were the last rolls the bank has. I was really surprised to find it was a 1952, I thought it was a red-brown 70s penny by looking at the edge.

Something's wrong with my photography today. The black parts are just areas beginning to brown, and the pink parts are really red areas. The penny looks quite "fresh". The green stains on the reverse isn't verdigris, it only appears green on the photo. In hand it looks like a white spot but it's hard to see.

I'm guessing the scratches and dings (especially the one above his eye) will keep the coin from getting a mintstate grade. It grades AU-58 RB I think, but if the grader is feeling very generous maybe it can get MS-60.

Thanks! Probably will be my highest graded George VI find in a roll. These are pretty rare to find.

The hit on his forehead keeps it from mintstate right?

Wear is what prevents your coin from being MS. The darker areas of the coin are due to wear.

I didn't know that. So coins don't tone on their own but needs wear to tone? I learn something new every day from here!
Do grades below MS not receive comments like "red" or "red brown"?

The coin having some red on it threw my grading way off the top. I undergrade unlustrous coins, I overgrade lustrous ones... I need more practice.

Yeah the pics are pretty bad. I can see more details on the hair in hand, looks like all if not most of his hair is still there. It was getting late when I photographed this so the lighting is not the best. I'll try again later today.

Edit: I have taken better pictures. I've put the coin in a flip last night so here are the photos of it in the flip. The first two photos are taken in the shade, the last 2 are taken under sunlight. I think the colour of the second set os more true to life but it is also a bit too dark because of the phone camera auto-adjusting brightness.

The one taken in the shade to show the contrast between the brown and red.

These two were taken under full sunlight. On the obverse, the only real scratches are the "x" SW of the ear, the one on the nape, behind his head, on his chin, and the huge one on his brow. The scratches running from NE to SW isn't on the coin. Must have happened when I wiped the flip with a tissue to clean it. The colour also isn't this dark, it's only beginning to brown slightly on the relief and on the tight spots are red.

There's something on top of the IV of Georgivs. I'll look closer into it later when I have access to a microscope.

Thanks. I guess I over-expected what I could find in a roll. Had it been uncirculated it wouldn't be in a roll.

By the way, is grading any George VI coin the same as in Canadian? I bought a UK silver sixpence and I want to know what it grades.
