Hey All,
On tonight's episode they have a customer come in with a 1861 C Liberty Head (No Motto) Half Eagle. There were only 6879 minted(thank you CCF coin facts). Will it be real or will it be counterfeit?

In the promos, it looked suspiciously like a casting, at least to me.
Edit: Well, if anyone cares, I like my crow with ketchup.

I'm not a gambler, but the promos like that are usually real.

Who sells their coin for $8,000.00 when an appraiser tells him it's worth upwards of $15,000.00 ?

Here is what happened 6 months ago, guy walks into the shop with the coin, one of the staff (not rick, oldman, chumlee or the son as they are not allowed to work in the shop anymore) calls the gem/coin guy from the back room, that guy who checked the coin works for rick as a Gemologist. He says, yep its real, they decide on a price and he may or may not sell it. 2 months ago they close the shop and set up to record, they pay the guy with the coin to come back, set up the drama of calling the coin guy, pretend to haggle and let us all think Rick got a bargain.

Yeah, ok, but, did they guy with the coin give it away just to be on tv? I don't know anything about those gold coins. Could he have easily gotten, let's say, 12K somewhere else? There's plenty of people that give their stuff away to Gold and Silver Pawn, just to be on tv IMHO.

I watched it today. The coin would have to be sent to a TPG. Also, possibly cleaned. The expert did not mentioned anything about cleaning.

Fusion555 - where did you hear about the circumstances about how the deal took place? I can see how most of the people who come on the show have already been screened. I know they aren't just walking in off the street the day of shooting. The show is great anyway and the old man is funny.

I like the show myself and yep, the old man is hilarious

I work with a guy who has been to the store. FWIW he said it's much smaller than it appears to be on tv.

Quote: I work with a guy who has been to the store. FWIW he said it's much smaller than it appears to be on tv. My boss stopped there 2 or 3 years ago and said the same thing. In person for the general public it is a tourist trap selling T Shirts. I remember hitting up a pawn shop in Biloxi MS across from the Casinos back in 2001 and looking at the watches (since I am a watch collector) and the owner showed me and let me try on a $20K Rolex Masterpiece which at the time I knew nothing about. The last time I was down there was 2006 after Hurricane Katrina and it looked like a war zone even a year later Don't mess with MS
