1945-P War Nickel Struck on Dime Planchet

Found this at a flea market this morning.. It was pouring rain I almost didn't stop in to look.

Any feedback, comments and info appreciated.

What I think I know so far

  • 1945-P

  • Smaller and thinner then a nickel but bigger then a dime

  • Weak design

  • Silver

I figure because Smaller and thinner then a nickel but bigger then a dime the strike didn't get all the details?

I don't have a scale to weight it yet.

Acid dipped coin. It thins and reduces the planchet.

Again, I don't understand the 1965 quarter. It's just a missing clad layer error.

Someone acid dipped the obverse on the quarter and left the reverse alone to make it look like it was missing the clad. On the rim area you can see where the devices are thinned. If it were a missing clad the devices would be crisp.

1965 quarters don't have much of a rim as a normally struck piece in the first place. If it is missing a clad layer and there is excess space between the dies, the devices wouldn't be able to fill in during the strike. This would explain the weakness in the design rim and peripheral lettering and date.

Besides an expected heavier strike weakness on the reverse, is there anything else that would leave you to believe that it was acid dipped? Do the copper surfaces look altered?
