I was bidding on a item couple days ago ... And got carried away. The auction went much higher then I thought it would. Today I checked and I see this message that I am offered a second chance to but the item ... At my highest bid. How does this happen? Did someone bid it up ...then back out? Edit .. had to move to my laptop to post the link http://www.ebay.com/itm/DANSCO-Coin...p=true&rt=ncEdited by GR58 06/05/2014 7:47 pm

Perhaps he/she has more than one?

I have sent out second chance offers. Usually it means the original buyer backed out, didn't pay or returned the item. The seller can choose to send a second chance offer to the second highest bidder at their final bid.
I have done this twice and both times the second highest bidder took advantage and bought the item right away.

Joe .. Thanks for the reply.
Looking at the bids .. I see I was not the first ... Or the second highest.
I guess I am a little worried .. Someone was bidding it up for the seller ...
But I have no reason to think that ...just a feeling

To check for shill bidding, I think you can check the bidding histories of the bidders and see if they bid a lot for that particular seller. If you got carried away maybe you should be glad you didn't win it

Looking again at the bids ... If it wasn't for number one and two bidder ... I would have gotten the albums at over $8.00 under my highest bid.
Would it be out of line to ask seller to sell at the lower price?
Or just go ahead and buy them ... Because I really want them, even though is about $20 over what I really wanted to pay.

You could tell the seller you have had second thoughts about paying that much and make a lower offer. If he says no then just be prepared to not get that item. If not many accept his second offer it will get relisted and you might get it for the lower price.

Be careful of second chance offers, its quite common for sellers to have there shill bidder win the auction just to see how high you will go then give you the "second chance"
If you want the item and the price is good for you, buy it

Yup, this has happened to me before. Usually the highest bidder backs out. Since I was the second highest bigger I was able to get the coins I wanted :)

Looks like Mraderm946 had it right. The seller says he had multiple sets of these albums. I went ahead and bought them. And I am very happy with how they look. This link shows the albums after I started putting coins in them. https://goccf.com/t/179712

I have bought a few second chance coins in the past. If it is from one of my regular sellers. I never question the reason just glad to get the coin for what I wanted to pay. If it is from a new seller or not a regular. I always offer $10.00 under what my last bid was, if I get it fine if not no biggy. And that is just for my selfconscience makes me feel like everything was on the up and up.

I like that method of thought pawpaw. I think it would be important to make sure your 'high' bid is only what you would have paid for it in the first place, thus making a shill bid irrelevant and then offering $10 (or something correct to the ratio of worth) less for unknown sellers protects you even more.
Now if I could only get into the habit of only bidding what I would want to pay and not get caught up the excitement of the auction... :)

I don't see any obvious signs of shilling.
I'd suggest emailing the Seller and letting them know what you are willing to pay.

My take on second-chance offers is: If you trust the seller enough to buy from them directly then you should trust them enough to accept a reasonable second-chance offer.

I occasionally sell on ebay and usually have more than one of the item that I am selling. If the item reaches a selling point that I am happy with then I will send out multiple second chance offers. I never had anyone bid up the price. If I am unwilling to sell for a certain dollar amount then I use that as the starting point. No big deal - take it or leave it. Still Lookin
