Hello all, I know almost nothing about coins, but I came into ownership of two unopened proof set envelopes. They are silver proof sets one is from 1958 and the other is 1964. Are these of any value? Does it lower the value of the sets if the envelops are opened? Thanks for your time. Bishogpwa

Usually people want unopened things. Don't know why but just like Hot Wheel cars or other collectables. In the original package sort of worth more. Me, I'd just open them.

Even though the envelopes are gummed, the US Mint did not seal them upon shipment. Many Proof and Mint Set envelopes have spontaneously sealed over the years due to humidity or a previous owner licking it. Open 'em up and see what goodies you have, you might be lucky and find some Cameos

Use steam and you can open the envelope without tearing it.

There they are. The 58 Franklin half dollar has some weird coloration on the "IN". How do you tell if a coin is a cameo? Bishopgwa

Well, those are nice to have.... I can't tell from the photo what that spot is on the Franklin half dollar. Check here for info. on cameos. https://goccf.com/t/128855Some pics have been removed from that thread so scroll down a bit to see some really nice pics. The devices on cameos appear 'frosted' rather than shiny while the fields (backgrounds) are still very shiny.

Cameo effect: the devices appear white on a black background the franklin looks to have "frosted devices" partial cameo maybe full cameo hope this pic shows it edit: it doesn't really show it in my pic, frosted devices on a black field in the right light you will see it just kinda move it slightly under the light the coin will get shiny then darken when it darkens if the cameo effect is there you will see it the devices almost glow

Buy a halide bulb and see how many scratches are on them. The envelopes looked a little rough. That doesn't mean that You don't have some mint condition treasures, and especially if they came from Your Dad or Grandpa or that"cool" uncle.
