I offered $145.00. Seller declined. I don't like what looks like a partial hole. Thanks in advance.

I already don't like this seeing as RedBook puts an 1857 VF-20 Large date at 125$, now maybe prices have changed significantly since this, but 75$ more and what I agree looks like a partial hole? I would pass.

Not my area, but a hole is a hole.
If you don't like the coin today you will NEVER like it.
Sad, as the coin is otherwise nice.
PASS!

Even as a Large Date, that isn't better than a $70 coin. Be thankful he didn't accept your offer, and better your pricing/grading skills for the future. You nearly threw a bunch of money out the window here.

This coin is not worth your bid. Both sides are defaced/damaged and the coin appears cleaned.

IMHO, the offer to buy for $145 was overly generous. That does look like a hole/dig, and the reverse scratches are equally bad. The seller probably paid too much for the piece when he bought it. A nice VF-XF will likely cost $200. A dealer paid me $250 for a pleasing XF-45 last year. The catalog values are low. I'd buy problem-free F-VF 1857's all day long for $70 a pop !!

I don't think it is an attempted hole, just a bad hit. But combined with the heavy scratches on the back, the weak areas and what looks like some other damage down by the date I think $145 was too high as well. $100 maybe but no more.

I bought it from a shop on e-bay actually. As for being for sale I suppose all coins are for sale at the right price! :)
