I was noticing on my 1870 IHC that there is a lump in the neck, almost looks like part of a digit. Does anyone know about this? some kind of variety? thoughts on grade?

Gradewise, I think strong VG-10+ for a technical grade, but I think the detail is that of a F-12. Nice coin.

As for the variety, I don't know. Someone else might.

Found it...
S23 1870, Doubled die reverse.
Obv. 18: (RH) Large die lump on neck above pearl 4 & 5 similar to a top of a 7 digit. Die stage A: No die cracks. Die stage B: Die crack from the base of the date to the rim at 7:30.
Note: This obverse is also paired with a T3 reverse, which does not qualify for listing here as a variety.
Rev.: T2-N: Strong doubling on the E in CENT, left wreath and hori- zontal shield lines. Die stage A: Straight die crack from the NE corner of the shield to the rim at 1:00. Die stage B: Die crack from the rim at 9:00 to left wreath, continuing down to the olive leaves.

thanks 52Raymo, you rock!! I turned it over, and sure enough; strong doubling on the "E" in CENT, but not on the rest of the letters. Any idea what kind of value this could add to the piece, or rarity factor?

Snow gives it one star.................. Should get a slight premium, probably no more than 2X.

I'm thinking of a solid VG10 grade.

You guys are tough graders. I have seen worse in VF slabs. Here is an NGC VF20 as an example:

I personally say F-15. Its up for sale on ebay now as an S-23...lets see how she does.
