I just started an internship about 15 days ago and my boss was talking about getting my first paycheck and what I'll spend it on. I told him I'll probably buy a few coins since I collect them. He then said he inherited a small collection of coins a while ago. Obviously I'm intrigued to see what he has. We get along really well and everything is going great. Is it out of line for me to ask him to see them sometime, most likely not at work but still. It felt awkward today if I were to ask that.

Focus on the internship for now.
Towards the end of the internship show him some of the coins you bought. If he still shows interest, then approach the subject of seeing his coins sometime.

I like that idea. Probably will chat about that stuff more. We get along really well so that is a plus.

"I'll show you mine if you show me yours" rarely works out in a work environment. keep business... business, especially if it's only been 2 weeks.
after an extended time casually mention a new coin, if you get no reaction then it's clear the boss doesn't want to play friends

It's not to smart to advertise you have a coin collection anywhere. And remember you may not be working there in the near of far future. Regardless, people just have to talk, talk, talk about STUFF. And sometimes it gets exagerated. Your really don't know this person and you really don't know who he knows. Although he may be the most honest person on Earth, he well may know lots of not so honest people. Home invasions occur so many times due to just to much blabbing. Keep your buisness at work or at least for now.

@Just_carl - a famous person once said " a little skepticism is healthy" , but damn, you are taking it to a whole nother level my friend!
I work in a office and talk about coins with my boss all the time. The best time to do so is in the mornings when everyone is getting their coffee, at the end of a shift, just not during your work day. Often times employees who have a cool boss/employer will try to take advantage and slack off during work time. I also think he wouldn't have said anything if he wasn't prepared to show it. Just use some tact and keep us posted on what he has!

I have to agree with everyone's post's here. And Just carl makes a VERY GOOD POINT as well. Some trust must be extended to all but, REAL trust is EARNED! Just my opinion. Good luck with what ever you decide.

I agree with just_carl for two reasons. Primarily your safety. 'Nuff said on that. Secondarily you want your supervisor to remember your work and not that you helped him/her with some coins when people are calling for references in the future.

Loan him a book on the subject. If he doesn't return it, you made a smart investment.
