To anybobody interested in this kind of rarities:

Here is a nice Charles IV w. Countermark Contemporary Counterfeit Sheffield Plate Piece:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...111388039491

I would not dare to call this item a coin, but for the interested in this area of numismatics it would be a great addition.

With Regards

Looks as if it was dug up. I wonder if the countermark is authentic, or if the whole was a forgery. I've notified swamperbob about this, as it would seem to be something right up his alley.

I believe I recognize the coin as being a 1792 version that is known with and without the counter stamp. The stamp is counterfeit. The variety is from Birmingham.

It is a Sheffield plate on copper making it early and was likely buried.

For me, they are both probably worth about $1.26 each.
I would actually BUY both at that price.

I agree the first one is worth $1.26 but the second has enough detail to catalog the variety. I see it as a $50 minimum value thing. One thing to realize is that High grade examples represent at most 1% of the total a number available and that is likely to be 500 or fewer coins worldwide. (That number is a total guess on my part but it is the MAXIMUM I could envision at this time.

Actually, the 1st is dated 1792, and is an imitation of a Santiago D. A. 8 Reales. The A. Patterson collection (sold by bonhams, 1997) had a similar example first listed as genuine but withdrawn at the auction.

The identification is GNL# 1792-O: Ea/R: SoDA-001 It is the a rather common counterfeit with over 10 identified. Is this the same coin from the auction?
