Can anyone give me insight into Paul Sims, Inc. ? If you subscribe to a numismatic publication, you have seen the name as they advertise very heavily. Does anyone have any comments- good, bad or indifferent. Is their grading accurate? Ever had to return anything? etc. Any insight would be helpful. If anyone would like to recommend a good mail-order dealer that would be appreciated also. Thanks

If that's the Paul Sims in Richmond, Virginia, I can tell you that I purchased coins for gifts from him on about 6 occasions (most purchases were State Quarters). On 5 occasions coins were as advertised or better. On one occasion I purchased a Columbian Half Dollar advertised as Uncirculated, but on arrival, the coin was found to have abrasions in the obverse field which looked like cleaning with a scouring media of some sort. Could have been a legitimate mis-packaging mistake. Steve

I've ordered from them, not lately though. They used to send me a catalogue once a month or so, and when I saw something I liked I would spend maybe $200, 5 or 6 times a year. Mostly ASEs, some Pandas, a few Morgans, Franklins, Walkers, that kind of stuff.
Then they stopped sending me the catalogue and I missed it. When I called them up to see what was up, the operator told me I'd been inactive. Maybe I hadn't bought anything in 6 months or so. She wanted me to send her $2 for a catalogue. So I asked her to send me a free catalogue and I'd buy some stuff. Another $200 order, then no more catalogues.
I'm not an expert grader or anything, but the Morgans and Franklins were pretty shiny, they were selling them as GEM BU. I'm not sure the coins were uncirculated, but they were pretty clean. Like I said though, I'm not an expert.
I don't buy from them anymore, I was easily a $1000 a year customer (okay, it's not that much $$, but c'mon) and I didn't warrant a free monthly catalogue. Give me a break.

You might want to check what people say on the other boards, such as PCGS (especially) and NGC. You might be in for a shock. Search for "Paul Sims" and follow the links (there's a good link within one of the first threads).
I have purchased from them in the distant past, but never again.

I bought 4 coins from Paul Sims years ago; they were overgraded and/or cleaned. I returned two and they promptly sent a refund. I kept the other two and eventually sold them (at a loss). I think this company makes most of their money from new collectors who don't recognize "problem" coins. If you decide to buy from them, I recommend that you closely inspect your purchase as soon as you get it. Don't hesitate to return any coin that doesn't meet your quality requirements.
By the way, welcome to the forum!

Thanks all for the input. I have purchased some stuff from them also, but wanted to get some unbiased opinions. A too am not a grading specialist. Alot of the coins advertised are pq uncirculated. The one I purchased was awful clean for a coin from the late 1800's and with a fair amount of bagmarks. It is still a nice coin. I might have to take it to a shop and see what they say and offer me for it. Thanks again.

The bagmarks were probably marks from the cleaning. :(

Only once for me and I was treated like a second class citizen when I asked for a return on the coin. Luckily I bought insurance when I return mailed the coin as they claimed they never received it.

I've seen his ads in many publications. I always thought his stuff looked too good to be true. Plus the $2.00 he charges for a catalog is insane.
