Hello Fellow Coin Collectors- This is my first post but I have been following your site for quite awhile. I collect Canadian silver & gold coins specializing in silver dollars. I have a question for the experts out there. Having recently purchased some pre 67 proof sets, I obtained a 1958 set that was sealed in pliofilm as per the 61-67 sets. It is my understanding that up to 1960 they came in cardboard holders. Was this possibly made for the American market or is it a special issue?

There are no proof sets prior to 1981. The sets you refer to are prooflike sets, a name given by collectors to these sets, the mint never described these as anything other than brilliant uncirculated collector sets. 1958 sets were in the cardboard holders only. If you have a set in plio it was put there aftermarket. Be careful as it likely contains only circulation strikes and worth bullion value only.

Thanks DBM Your right, I meant to say proof like. It's possible the coins were sealed at a later date. I can grade coins fairly well and it looks like they are all about MS63-64 condition. Guess I have a set of 58 coins that are not in the proper packaging but individually are still worth more than I paid for them. I will post pictures later.

JimmyD...COTY did repack some real 1958 prooflike sets into pliofilm in the 1980's. They look very similiar to the RCM issued 1961-67 sets. Check the pliofilm closely for any COTY markings and if you find any they will be a real 1958 PL set.

@dollarman...COTY was a coin club and dealer in Saskatchewan. If my memory is correct they were in Saskatoon. They repacked real PL sets in pliofilm so they would be preserved. Usually there was COTY embossed in the pliofilm of there repacks.

Wireman- After checking the packaging with my glass, there is no reference to COTY but it does have "uncirculated" embossed on it. Have to decide know whether to keep them in its package or use them as single prooflike coins.

could also be a privately packed giftware set, made to resemble a later PL set.

Jimmy...1958 PL coins are easily distinquished from business strike uncirculated coins. The easiest way to tell would be from pictures.

Decided to send these not so great pictures until I can upgrade my camera. Their not perfect but will give an idea of the packaging. The word "uncirculated" appears below the silver dollar
