Reminds me a bit of tooling used to press PEM style hardware/fasteners into sheet metal on hydraulic presses. Looks as if someone put a penny in between the anvil and hammer and gave it a squashing.

1) What happened is the coin was smashed and damaged. 2) What it is called is a damaged coin.

Whatever caused it, it's a smashed and damaged PMD coin for sure.

H'mmm, very strange. Reverse memorial transfer on the obv. and also lathe lines and part of an obv. transfer on the reverse. If indeed PMDthen more than one coin was used to make this. Curious, any possible way of an OC strike here partial collar ?

PMD is the LAST thing I wanted to hear. I was told by someone with pretty good knowledge that it *may* be OC, looks like it's showing brockage on the obverse but then it got caught up in the sorter at the Mint. He said it was a mysterious error whatever that means. Is this possible?

Rookie thinks the striations (circular pattern) running through the indention on the reverse look similar to the tip of a jack or manual press. The obverse showing similar indents, except straight lines. Maybe cent was used to shim something up. Can not see the mint press striking this design in the affected area.
I could be wrong. Thanks, Doug.

I saw one just like this one on ebay not long ago.Not sure if it's the same one but both are just damaged coins. Post Mint Damage. There's a million ways a coin can be damaged outside the mint

Ok. I appreciate, Jasper. It's not like I have any serious $$ into it - less than $10. I just wanted it to be an error. Can you explain the Memorial columns on the obverse? Honestly, that's the only reason I did not dismiss it as PMD immediately.
