I picked this one up pretty cheap (~$40) at an auction. Curious as to its grade and as to whether I should send it off for professional grading. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Welcome to the forum!

Looks like it has been quite harshly cleaned. AU Details, not worth getting graded.

A very low value coin, the price of grading would be larger than or equal to the full value of the coin.

Definitely cleaned. Obverse photo almost appears that it's been polished. I'm going say AU Details as well.

I'd need better photos before I'd pronounce it as having been cleaned. There does seem to be enough wear (especially on the eagle's breast) to call it XF45. I concur that there'd be little benefit in submitting it for certification.

There are a "ton" of lightly circulated 1879-O and 1880-O dollars out there. Yours was probably one of those coins that someone decided to dip, or clean, to try and make it look better. It didn't work.

I always heard that the New Orleans mint released those dates in quantity and then recalled them days and weeks later. I know that there were solid date bags of lightly circulated 79-O and 80-O dollars in the Treasury hoards that were released in the early 1960's. (Same thing occurred with some 84-S bags too that had nothing but lightly circulated coins in them).

Bet that's where your coin originally came from.
