The com stock load is an area with several mines and is close in proximity to Carson city. The CC mint was developed due to this and many Morgans were produced there with silver from the comstock area.

It is highly unlikely that a 1879 P Morgan was produced with silver from the Comstock Lode.

Considering how much silver was pouring from the Comstock and the fact that the sherman silver purchase act was put in place to help support the falling silver prices caused by that production it is almost a certainty that most of the silver useed for the Morgan dollars came from the Comstock.

Cool dont know why they never documented which silver was used for the morgans, traceability was not that important that time in mass production

I'm not sure what you mean about not being able to get the book etc, but if you are able to shop online, I highly reccomended this book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/08734...obot_redir=1I have really enjoyed it and it will tell you anything/everything you need to know about cc/comstock lode.

I believe Conder101 has this right. The output of the Comstock Lode year in and year out far exceeeded what was consumed by the mintage of Morgans at Carson City. Most was shipped elsewhere. I'd add that by 1880, there was a very substantial amount of silver coming out of Tombstone that was also being bought by the government.

I second Hondo's book recommendation! It's a fascinating read on the whole mining culture of the Carson City era. Van Ryzin is a great writer and author. You can find this book fairly cheap lately on ebay, surprising as some of his other books have really started to rise in price as they are now out of print. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crime-of-18...400733184516That one above is super cheap! I paid more than $50 for my copy when it came out. There are two others up for sale on ebay now from $40-60. Get a copy and read it you won't regret the time spent, if you have any interest in mining and the old west era after the West coast gold rush turned to the silver rush.
