I had an idea a week ago about bringing all my 1914 coins together in a picture to signify the centenary of the outbreak of WWI, and have now come to think about showcasing all coins of any year ending in a '4'. any takers? I reckon it should be pretty interesting.
as a side-note though we haven't got our 2014 circulation coins yet in Singapore, would be cool otherwise, yet I haven't exactly a true liking for local coins...

I quite like the new Singaporean series, very nice designs.
I'd be interested in such a thread.

That sounds like fun. We would get lots of potential coins. Maybe limit it to dates ending in "14" since "4" is not considered a lucky number in parts of the world. ~jack

As to the picture theme. How would you display that? Are you thinking of gluing coins to a board? And how far back are you trying for. 1814? 1714? 1204? I wonder if there are any coins dated 14 BC? Sounds like a real good coin project though.

Sorry to have taken this off topic but to clarify, Tetraphobia is common in East and South East Asia -- the pronunciation of the word for "four" is very similar to "death" in some Chinese dialects as well as other language groups. In fact, "14" is just as bad if not worse!

haha yes certain conservative or traditional people in Asia wouldn't like to have anything to do with the number 4. although eastern culture doesn't factor in my personal life at all and although we speak English all the time in the family, my parents do joke about that number 4 superstition sometimes, although I get the feeling they believe in it at the same time. I don't get the impression that this issue is rife amongst the younger generation here in Singapore i.e my generation however.
as to the idea, I don't mean taking a picture of coins glued to a board like a collage, I would rather sell my collection off than destroy my dear coins haha just like how we've been sharing our coins in the "how far back can we go" thread, just post a nice picture/ pictures of coins in our possession, and definitely close-ups of what we personally feel are really deserving of close-up 'scrutiny'. naturally I'd like not to restrict it to years ending in '14' as that'd severely restrict the variety of coins all of us will get to see and learn about.
so in short, just post whatever coins we have whenever we like, as long as it ends in 4, since it also makes for easy counting back the years or decades rather. of course, participation would be at the individual's fancy, so if they have an issue with 4 they can choose not to do so. Sounds good? :D

and here's my 'inaugural' opening of this hopefully successful thread haha... behold! ok, not the biggest out there, but it's my largest, and almost 4 oz of pure silver! don't worry, it has already been impaired by some fool! otherwise I was very careful with placing that little 5 cent on top for a nice size comparison haha ok, who's next?

nice! I see a great variety of countries too. I like your 1944 peso piece especially. I missed out winning one of the same date in a recent auction, although it wasn't anywhere near as nice as your example.
perhaps I should post more of mine again, but I think i'll be doing that only after a few more people have posted so it won't appear that the thread is being dominated by only a few people. which reminds me, I think I might have my first pre-Helvetian swiss coinage posted up next.
