Hi members,

This is one of the oldest coin I have ever bought. The coin is very historical as the French King Henri III (r.1574-1589) was also the Polish King. He was assassinated by a monk finally. But I know little about the physical features of this coin. I need your help.

The coin is 13.38 grams and 31.0-31.4 mm. Anger mint (info. from the seller)

According to its weight and size, it is too heavy to be a teston. Can anyone know the denomination of this coin?

What does the letter P or F beneath the portrait stand for?

I test this coin with my designated N52 Neodymium magnets slider, it slides down faster than a 90%Ag coin with similar weight. This means it is likely a debased coin. Can anyone know the silver content of it? Henry

See the coin below:

Here are some that look similar to yours. It looks to be in French though. Very interesting coin. Hopefully someone with more info will come along soon.

Great find keepcalmandcoinon! In fact, Lot 85 from that page looks like an exact match -- just off by one year.

Here's a similar 1578 Angers (F mintmark) franc in a little higher grade

Silver fineness is 0.833. I don't think your coin is intentionally debased.

"Axe des coins : 7 h."

Thank you your information, all of you. One more question: what is the meaning of 7 h here? Henry

Some more information got from the World Coin Encyclopedia:

A silver franc was first introduced under Henry III in 1577, replacing the teston which had until then been the principal silver portrait coin....

The denomination of this coin is Franc.

"Coin" in French means the die. This one has a 7 o'clock reverse rotation rather than the modern 12 o'clock. A coin in French is a "piece".

I have one of these francs, and I recall it being the first silver franc. My favorite French royals are Henri IV demi francs ca 1595-1605. Henri was a Protestant who converted to Catholicism to end the bloody religious wars, famously saying "Paris is worth a mass." He was killed by a crazed monk too, but not before he started the Bourbon dynasty.

Yes, knowing more behind the coin will definitely add fun to the hobby of collection. Henri IV is the first Bourbon, also the first King of Navarre from 1572. I will buy/bid one if I have a chance. Henry
