Can you post better Pics.,also have a close look at the Letters on the Reverse,I'm on a laptop at the moment and can't get a good clear look but if they have indented bases then its a fake before even working to the 2 & 3.

hey ill upload some better photos tonight. my camera is struggling to focus on them. I definitely think these aren't fakes as they have been left untouched for the past 50 years. I still have another 40 kilos of coins to sort through

Quote: They both look genuine to me & they'd both grade aVF. I tend to disagree as the centre ring is identical on both coins and it looks just "Wrong" to me

All of the '23 production came off two working dies, from one master die. The product of each working die should therefore be very similar.
I would assume that early strikes off both dies would have shown no or little evidence of die cracking. The die cracking is probably due to faulty hardening of the dies. Something like 2/3rds of the total number of '23's have diagnostic (mostly concentric) die cracking. It is a (very unreliable) diagnostic tool in the authentication of them. Both of these examples show this feature.
The lettering on geniune '23's is flat based.
Also look for the relationship of date numerals in relation the adjacent beading, when comparing genuine '23's with altered date fakes.
The Chinese have also made dies to fake '23 halfpennies. These coins can mostly be identified by false patination, and also by the positional relationship of the lettering to to the adjacent rim beading.

Check out the die cracks on the right hand side along the bottoms of the legends. I've never seen a FAKE with these ! + everything lines up right & they have flat based lettering.

Look o.k. but the obverse of coin one worries me, the wear on the King looks much more recent than 50 years.!!

Yeah my dads had them for a long time and never touched them he was never really interested in them he hasn't even looked at them in 30 years. his father was a hoarder who collected everything he probably found it lying around somewhere. I'm really new to this so when searching through these coins should I be looking for certain colours and conditions or just dates?. I have been using a guide for dates. But I have noticed a lot of really nice looking coins that look brand new?
