My grandfather is looking at off loading his coin collection that he has been adding to since forever.... He asked me how he should go about it as there seems to be no local dealers around (NSW South Coast). He cant take them anywhere as he is nudging 100 and cant travel, and I wouldn't want to risk moving them either.
Can anyone recommend a respected and fair dealer perhaps in Sydney that we could contact?
I'd have happily helped sell it though ebay and other places, but its the size and value of it all that puts it over my head.

ebay buyers and B&M dealers are mostly sharks and only want to pay 10-15% value for the coins.
Go through the collection and pick the gems and get them slabbed, that "May" insure that the old bloke gets some value :ok:

You need to know the approximate values first. After you know approximate values, you could begin selling them. I wouldn't limit myself to one method of selling. Since you can't do ebay (or similar) and you can't get a table at a coin show, in my opinion, the two best methods have been taken from you. Do you know any coin collectors you can trust that would like to buy? I hate to see you take them to a random coin shop and get about 50% retail.

If I ever needed to liquidate, I plan on getting a table at a coin show and pretend like I'm a dealer for a few days. You would be more likely to get full retail with no fees except for the price of the table. If it's quality material, it will move quick. Good luck and congratulations to the old fella for for a long life and hopefully much more ahead!

I've noticed that Coins tick over at Market Stalls, the stands that are most successfull seem to have a range of Antiques with the Coins as a sideline, buyers seem to purchase old coins on a whim, probaly because their 'old'.

Hi Craig,

The first thing I would do is lash out and buy a copy of McDonalds pocket Australian Coin Guide.
Will probably be a great investment at about $30 but couple of notes:-
1) the coin values listed are retail so you will NOT get that price from a dealer. Expect 50-60% or so.
2) Even as just retail prices, they can be rather high.

The main thing there though is that you are trying to identify the real gems from the commons in the collection. The more you know about what you have the better off you'll be in any sale discussions.

Finally a word on sale of complete sets vs single coins. Selling just singles can result in all the high value coins going but you being left with the rest. Just something to be aware of.

Cheers
Peter

P.S. Another option that needs to be mentioned is maybe an Auction house like Roxbury's or Downies. Worth a call I guess

Unfortunately We didn't get to any of this in time at all and its now been rolled up into the estate. Can anyone recommend any specific reputable dealers in NSW?

Sorry to hear about your loss Craig.

As for dealers, I can only really comment on people I deal with in Brisbane. Namely Peter and Hugh at Colonial Coins and Medals in Adelaide st. They have never done me wrong.
Also maybe Roxbury's Auction house could be an option. I've bought from them and have no complaints.

Hopefully one of the NSW guys can point to some options closer to home.

Cheers
Peter
