You really dont like that proof? I was going ti bid on it. Even at a lower grade it has to still be rare. I bought this one a few days ago. Honest feedback pls. I can take it. But let me say I think its great. Its nothing like some of the ones in my collection but its the first one I bought to add to a 60+ year old collection.

I can use some advise. There is a 1883 pr62 I was thinking about bidding on. The photos are what troubles me. The close ups show a coin that looks nothing like the normal shot with holder. How do you judge color/overall apperance with a photo? As I have said, I dont care for dark or toned coins but with proofs I could make an exception. Does anyone know whT that coin is roughly worth? Thank you

I figure with only a few hundred around, it would be a solid investment and a nice addition to the morgan set.

Do proofs have mintmarks or are they all from the same mint?

Proof Morgans, as well as most classical American proofs, were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. A P-Mint Morgan doesn't have a mintmark under the wreath on the reverse. However, some Branch Mint Proofs, minted in "branch mints" (which are mints like O, CC, S, D; Mints that are not Philadelphia, the main mint) exist.

This website will provide you with a good deal of basic info about Morgans. This article in the link is about Proof Morgans, and it will provide you with a lots of good info regarding proof Morgans which seem to be your collecting theme. Read it from top to bottom, and you will see they mention branch mint proofs close to the end of the article.

That's the result of scanning a highly reflective coin (assuming I have the right auction). I don't think the images are doctored at all - that's what I'd expect such lighting on a Proof to look like - but you can figure the actual appearance to more closely resemble the slab image. It's about a $1700 coin.

I realized that the others I bought did not even come close as how beautiful they actually are through a photo. I guess its hard to show proof like theough photos? The seller said that this is very very good

My next one is upgrading this to a PL. There are 2 on ebay for around $350 ish. I have a ton of cc morgans mostly ungraded. I found 2 complete rolls of cc morgans in every grade imaginable. I took out all of the really nice ones and sold 3 circulated ones and one gsa on ebay. Was going to put another dozen on. I dont think theres any reason to have many multiples. A few nights ago, I counted 61 1881 s morgans. Why? Maybe he bought them as he came across them? Or investment? I dont know
Rest in Peace

Something else you can do is check VAMworld for the proof strike listing just to make sure you have the real deal. Here is the 1883 proof listing http://www.vamworld.com/1883-P+PROOF note the lump on the cheek that is obvious on the coin in the ebay listing.

I also do not know how old those coins were in the collection. So the pricing on them could be from many years ago?
