Nice find. Just for my envy and amusement, what do you all think it is worth?

I still see the shape, but it is definitely too angular to be a mintmark, and it is tilted in an unnatural way. I say that "S" is a series of small, well-placed scratches. Nice find; send it to a TPG to see what they think. I hope it's a business strike so you can rake in the moolah.

Since I don't have a realistic expectation of ever finding another, hopefully finer example as a replacement for this, I consider it priceless. Furthermore it fills a prominent space in an extensive Centennial type set collection. For amusement, pick an odd integer with no less than three zeros after it.

Ant76, yes, that is the same type of coin, a Trade dollar. They were minted from 1873 to 1885 in Philadelphia, San Fransisco, and Carson City. All of the Trade dollars minted from 1879 to 1885 are proof-only issues. Your 1883 had 979 made and in its condition, it is worth about $11,500 per NGC's website. You need to put some more photos of your coins on CCF so that everybody can help you, although you seem to be doing pretty well yourself.

As a side note, I love seeing threads like this about coins that I had absolutely no idea about. I learn a ton from reading these. Thanks for sharing judd1552!

Ant, Numismedia has your proof Trade dollar at $12,500. It is a very rare and pricey coin.

Honest to god, I only care about morgans. Sorry to everyone who likes other coins. I dont. I appreciate them, but not to collect. Maybe I'm still new or inexperienced. But I seem to only really like them
