I have been sitting on a sealed box set of 5 sets of the 25th Anniversary sets of the ASE. I been procrastinating about what to do with them. (They're not going to become stale.)

So anyway, I went into a local coin store today and happened to ask what they were worth and got a real non-committal answer to my question about how much a mint sealed box of 5 sets was worth.

The first response was a snarky question to me of how much did I pay for them. (response was don't remember as I bought them from the mint and besides what difference does it make.)

Next response was don't worry because they would always buy them.

I was in the process of buying a Donaghala and a Charlotte $5 gold piece. For a fairly good piece of change. When I heard their answers I just got upset with them and left without completing the purchase.

Never did find out what the fair value would be. Anyone know?

Even though they came out a couple years ago, since they are in a mint sealed box can they be graded as first strike of something like that (NGC).

Was I wrong to be upset with their customer service and snarky answers?

The mint sold them at $300 per set.

Coins like these sell for the most money right after they come out.

I think right now you might get $500 to $550 a set.

Edit .. I forgot to say, the prices I posted are what a dealer might offer. Without seeing a greysheet .. this is
just a guess .. but what I remember seeing lately

APMEX is currently selling the sets for $679 and that is not one that can get First Strike. If these get first strike 70's you can easily get $1300 a set. It will cost upwards of $200 to get each set graded. On ebay 5 sets in sealed boxe are listed around $3300 with single sets going over $600.

NGC early release is not a possibility...

PCGS FS is still possible if the sets were shipped before 12/7 and sent as a sealed box for grading...

If it was sent after 12/7 then you can still get the 25th Annie label with the sealed box.

It won't be cheap to grade the 25 coins but you WILL be rewarded with any RP or S 70's you get....

Seems common response types for a place you should just walk out of and not do business. If they are not going to answer a direct questions with a direct answer and just want to play street rat games, then treat them as they wish to be treated in kind and don't entertain their business as anything but a joke.

I cannot stand people that try to dance around a question instead of answer it. Even an "I don't know" would be fine, but the moment they want to play some game, I have no time for them.

I would suggest finding another coin store to do business with, one that is more reputable and respectful to its clientele.

Just stopped into a LCS, they said they would pay $425 - $450 for a opened set.

A set in mint sealed shipping box ... Maybe $500 ... They would have to call around.

As others have posted ...selling on ebay ... Or somehow finding someone who wanted them
Might be your best way to get the most.

Anyone that would be buying them to resell ... will want to buy them at a price where they can make some profit

True dat.

But it's quicker and easier to sell to a LCS and they don't charge eBay/PayPal fees, so it probably gets close to a wash if the LCS doesn't lowball you too much.

The whole situation is that all I really wanted to do was to get some idea of what the current value is. I've done a bit of business with this store and they know me by sight. So I was really surprised by the response that I was given. Oh well, there are other stores out there.

The thing that I liked about this particular store was that they carried a number of coins that are not carried by other stores in the area. Some truly rare coins, but then again their prices reflect what they carry.

I may buy from them again, but I most probably will not be selling to them some of my coins.

The easiest way to see current value is to check out ebay. Make sure to use the First Strike examples only. There is a big difference between ones that can still receive FS and the others. These sets are still pretty active. If dealers have these are shows I attend they are usually sold by the end of the show. I have never seen one listed for under $550 and that is for regular opened sets.
