I recently found this buffalo head nickel, but upon a closer look, noticed the date looks like an "1826" instead of a "1926," when the coin was in regulation. I was wondering if this could be a misprint of some kind? I know of double die misprints, but this appears to be the completely wrong decade.

I believe it's just wear and damage on the coin.

Welcome to the CCF!

It certainly looks to be what you say. I'm wondering if it was acid treated? Regardless, I'm inclined to believe that it's not the strike but PMD which is creating something of an illusion.

And note:

It is not "misprinted"

Mis-minted (I made that up) perhaps.

Only paper can be misprinted
