Read with great interest our fellow forumite "Darth Morgan"
post on using an 18% gray card, with very good results:

...

I don't have one yet, but I found this link on just printing
your own 18% gray sheet:

http://www.diyphotography.net/diy-m...-gray-cards/

I tried it under a raw St. Gaudens, looks promising..
Color is very close according to my naked eye, didn't have to edit it.
Will have to experiment further.

A tip, most of the camera bags on the market are 18% gray on the interior. Gray cards are available at most camera shops and don't cost much, get one that is not glossy if you do purchase on.

I got one that is made from a non-tear plasticized material that has a matte finish. It's about 6 x 9 inches, and comes with a protective sleeve for keeping it clean when stored in my equipment bag. The opposite side is pure white.

I suppose I could make one, but they won't be nearly as durable as this black/white/18% set I picked up for cheap on Amazon.

I made one (with a relatively cheap inkjet printer) and it worked ok, but was fairly grainy and not very even. I've since bought a set of black/white/18% from Amazon, and it works much better.
