Got a couple of questions about this 1972D Ike (cant find anything at the Ike Group). First, the L is broken at the bottom of the leg and it really doesnot look like PMD. The surface inside most of the break is at the same level as the field of the coin. Any ideas? Secondly, all of the letters (pic of t and e below) look to have a series of steps down on each side of the device. It would appear to me md except that it is on both sides and in multiples. I dont think I have ever seen this before, is this common and just the first time I have run across it? Thanks

On the larger coins it is easy to see machine damaged examples. A lot of the time it happens on the word DOLLAR. Halves are also included in this group. On the "L" it might be a struck through or just damage.

Also might be a Struck Through Grease. Just a thin layer in the bottom of the dies corners preventing a normal strike. Nothing real collectable though.

Looks like a worn out or damaged die to me.
