Here is a 57D/D, but my question is the Red color...I get 2-4 of these in each handful. Is it a different oxidation process? Different % of alloy combination? Does it attract collectability when found say with an error?
Just wondering.

I believe it's just patina/toning, if you're referring to the colour of the entire coin.

Toning can occasionally increase or decrease the value/collectability , but it all really depends on if the collector likes toning or not. I personally love a toned coin, and would pay a little extra.

Could be a metal detector find or even a fountain coin?

Almost looks like it was colored with a red magic marker?

Think I head those were copper stored around tobacco, or at least a little too close to tobacco, which causes the red toning.

The red color is caused by the formation of cuprous oxide.

THANKS Biokemist6...this was a perfect question for you (I would assume)!! Just looked up cuprous oxide, aka Red Copper Oxide...regarding the penny it might be the result of where the coin was stored at some great length of time. Also if it was at the end of a roll in let's say the "attic", ...the warm moisture.
Anyway, no it's not a red marker. I kinda like these, and they stand out. AMB

Maybe heated but I have numbers of these from different years 20's-50's and it's a "copper red" like a barn red almost...few at a time though.
