My Nikon D810 has a 36mp sensor, and I'm testing how much more detail I can resolve over my old 10mp Canon. The date area on this 1900/1890 Peru 1/2 Dinero coin is only about 4mm across--so it makes a good resolution test. Here is a shot on my old Canon at 100% crop. Not bad for such a tiny date using a 10mp sensor. I just shot this on my D810 with the Nikkor 105mm micro @ f11--the sharpest tested aperture. It was shot on flat picture control and Mup and EFSC. It looks like a microscope shot, and I appreciate how well the highlights are managed on a bright AU silver coin! Clearly, it's a huge improvement! Once I get a copy stand, dial-in lighting and perhaps use tethered focus-stacking, image detail might improve some more. Edited by DVCollector 08/19/2014 10:27 pm

Wow, really nice. What was the magnification?
Which Canon camera, the XS?
What lens on the Canon, and what magnification?

I started to scroll-zoom on the image...And kept scrolling, and scrolling, and...you get the picture. Nice resolution! I do astrophotography on nebulae and galaxies & I bet you could split a double star system with that camera from 1000 light years. Very nice!

Thanks! Both images were shot at the highest possible magnification. For the Nikon D810, that means ~1:1 using the Nikkor 105micro. The first image was taken with a Canon Powershot SD790IS (hand-held); I posted 100% crop.

It looks like Nikon has a winner! They seem to have finally emphasized pixel-level detail but didn't give up their traditional fine tonal contrast. This shot alone has me leaning more toward the D810. I do need to make sure it can integrate with Helicon stacking software...

Yeah--I'm pretty happy with what the D810 can do, and I think I've only scratched the surface. Quote: I do need to make sure it can integrate with Helicon stacking software. I see that Helicon can process RAW images--that saves a step for me over Zerene Stacker, but it might not yet support the D810 RAW codec?

Have you tried Registax? Commonly used by astronomy nuts like myself, but the price is right for your experimentation... FREE!

Quote: It looks like Nikon has a winner! Just a little tease for the nikon lovers: their great pictures ( thats serious) and show off how good the sony made sensors in nikon Cameras are. As far as I know Nikon still doesn't have the ability to make 35mm sensors

Quote: As far as I know Nikon still doesn't have the ability to make 35mm sensors That is very specialized technology--perhaps Nikon is happy to contract that out to Sony? From what I understand, many digital camera makers do not manufacture the sensors--Sony being one exception of course!

Here's one more before/after on a Peru 1/2 Dinero 1901/1891. You can see how the first image is breaking up at 100% crop even with sharpening. The new image looks so much better at 100%. I like how you can see all the tool marks in the digits! The lens was slightly off-axis, but focus-stacking (7 images) and shooting the coin on a grid solves those issues. But once I get a copy stand, I'll dial-in things better and get a proper lighting setup established. This was just 1 Jansjo light w/diffusion. Shot on a Canon SD790IS Shot on the D810 with a 105mm VR @f9--with diffusion, perhaps too much?
