I would guess severe die wear, interesting the coin has maintained it's color. The memorial has something going on behind the pillars?

What happens in a die clash? Just went to coin community glossary and didn't find it there.

Die clash is when the obverse and reverse dies smash togather without a coin in it, and leaves the imprint of the reverse on the obverse, when the next coin comes in to the die and is stamped it leaves the image of the reverse on the obverse and a image of the obverse on the reverse side.hope this helps hard for me to explain hopefully someone else can chim in thats better with words than I am sorry

What transfers over is the outline of the central deeper profiles. Thus you see the outline of the head between the columns.
