...S is at the bottom of Abe's coat.

It is just damage. The size is larger than a punch "S" should be.

Interesting feature to see is that the end of Abe's coat is missing...the "S" wasn't stamped over it or on top of it. It appears it's not there.

I did a progressive overlay to compare an S to this "damage" because the D in the 47 is a mint mark smaller than other D's (if used as a reference). I chose a 1946S so the separation between the two coins could be seen clearly. Have a look. Amazing coin damage.

I'll agree it has an appearance or shape "S", but don't think it resembles any SF mint mark punch(s) used by the mints? Another odd contact mark post mint. Thanks, Doug.
