In my opinion, this is corrosion and coin has multiple scattered marks and just ok eye-appeal
Don't get me wrong. Would I add it to my collection? Who wouldn't but...just saying.

The corrosion marks and hits here and there do detract from excellent eye appeal, but the IMO hammered strike with excellent hair details is real nice.

Market graded... Not graded the same as a modern coin, heck, not graded the same as a common-date later large cent.

PCGS and CAC

Wait til the sheeple and worshipers of the almighty TPG's weigh in.

That said are the "porous" marks due to ED or a worn or rusty die?

If there were several with the same identifying marks I would side with worn / rusty die but if the marks are unique I would have to say ED and some major dealer bias as to who submitted the coin both times.

At first I thought planchet voids but the discoloration is inline with corrosion.

Cool piece. It sold on Heritage last spring for $117,642.

I was thinking planchet flaws as well. Regardless, thewy ARE flaws and it should NOT grade that high. An MS coin it is, but not 66. There is enough there to keep it at 63 , maaaaaayyyyybe 64.

I think they should just give it to me as it is an obvious embarrassment to own a coin so over graded.

This is a coin that hurts CAC branding. They have no business slapping a green bean on that coin if the technical definition of their standard holds true and my understanding of that definition is "coins that have superior eye appeal for the grade" which this one clearly does not.

Agreed.

I attribute most of the marks to a porous planchet, not corrosion.
If I'm correct they only affect eye appeal which only has a minor impact on grading.
Eye appeal really only affects potential buyers.

But that linear mark in the field in front of Liberty should have impacted the grade (MS-65).
That's where "market grading" comes in.
And market grading is why it got a CAC sticker.

What's with the PNG hologram sticker on the back? Isn't NGC PNG's official grader? Or am I missing some PNG history?
