I have four kids, born in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011. I have put together birth year sets using the U.S. Silver Proof Set for that year, a silver proof quarter of the US State they were born in, and a Proof American Silver Eagle (except for 2009, obviously, I used just the regular bullion issue ASE).

I utilized the same Air-tite albums I used for my Zombucks collection that I recently posted.

Even though they are young, they enjoyed watching me put them together; they got a kick out of the fact that all of the coins were made the same year they were born. I think they will enjoy these when they get older. I know I really enjoyed putting these books together.

Tell me, what do you think? Have you done anything similar? Thanks!

I made my own birth year set, but you have to remember they were not all made in the year they were issued. The US gov't fiscal year begins in October, so I am sure that coins for 2015 will begin being made before 2015 arrives. More than likely all the coins in a year were minted while the person was... "being minted" as the case is due to the whole 9 months and all that.

Mine are just regular circulation business strikes.

the kid from 2009 might have lost some luck on the ASE, but they have a LOT more coins with the territories and the lincolns! are those the original content copper ones or just proofs or what? Might be interesting to make notes on them to give the kids when the time comes for them to have them which coin variant it is, why that one was chosen, etc.

They were the coins that come in the Silver Proof Sets. I am thinking of doing a business strike P and D set for them too.

Now that is a fantastic thing to do for kids. Sure would be nice to hear what they say in about 20 years. Bet they'll say WOW, this is great, thanks.

Nice sets!

For my daughter's birth last fall, I picked up a 2013 ASE in a generic "Baby's First Silver Dollar" plastic case. For Christmas, she also got one from my in-laws in a similar Christmas case. They'll be kept in the lock box along with her silver bar (an Easter gift from the in-laws) until she's old enough to appreciate them....as in, old enough to know NOT to spend them on a candy bar!

Birth-Year-Sets

My parents didn't do any special coin sets when I was born (that I'm aware of, anyway). The only options for 1983 would have been the proof set and the 1983 LA Olympics commemorative silver dollar. No silver proof sets, no ASE...not even a stinkin' mint set!
I have thought about picking up both the proof set and the commemorative dollar to keep in the lock box with my other stuff, maybe as part of my birthday present to myself.

Pretty cool for sure. I'm sure later in years they will appreciate it. Well Done!

Looks nice!

I just did a Satin mint set in a plastic holder for my 9 year old. She thought it was cool and keeps it in her room. I've got some plans for birth year valuable coins, but I keep them in my collection until the kids are older.

Great idea and presentation!

One of my other hobbies is woodworking, so I was going to make a wooden display frame for my dad for his 70th using his birth year coins. Haven't gotten around to it yet though but this gets me thinking about it again. Thanks!

I did similar for my MIL's 60th (1952) and Father's 70th (1943) recently. I thought they were unique gifts that no one else in the family would be giving them. Though I did it with simple UNC Philly business strikes, but they liked them regardless.

Interesting, matttheriley, that your first three children are 07, 08, & 09, because I have three boys with the same birth years, but we decided it was time to stop after the third boy.

Hi Mendelman,

My first three are Boys! We went for one more and got a Girl, although she is probably scrappier than the other three combined! I am glad we had her, my wife was starting to feel a little outnumbered. So fun having them so close in age, too! We are definitely done now, though!
