I've long wanted to own a U.S. coin from the 1700s and finally found one I could afford when I won an ebay auction for a 1798 Large Cent, an auction that came with terrible photos. The coin cost me $73. As I waited for the coin to arrive I studied the auction photos and I noticed that the 8 in the date was struck up in the bust. Some quick online research soon helped me learn that it is an "embedded 8" variety listed as Sheldon-154. It is listed as "Rarity 4+". The coin arrived today and isn't too bad for a 216 year old copper that saw a lot of circulation. The obverse bust is worn, which I read is not uncommon for this variety, but the date and LIBERTY are sharp and clear. The bulging reverse die is not horribly advanced. Only the A in AMERICA is totally gone and the UNI of UNITED shows. Parts of the bottom of the letters in ONE from ONE CENTS show. The reverse is quite nicely struck otherwise and has strong details around the bulging die with a very clear 1/100. This coin also shows some partial edge reeding (is that the correct term?) which I read somewhere that some specimens have. I'm happy with it. Paul Bulgerin

Nice oin and I think a little tougher than the rarity might indicate. The 154 was about the last 1798 I acquired. I think next to last, the 144 being the last.

It's considered an R-4+ but yes, it's more like R-5+ on the scarcity scale.
Nice coin!

Congratulation on your acquiring such a neat coin! Here's a recent hole-filler 1798 (different variety) I also recently got on ebay that makes yours look even nicer. I think it's a Poor-01 coin that might just change cipster's mind about *all* 179X copper

This, I believe, is what they call a "score."
