I have been looking at different hobo nickels, here is one that had a really nice picture and looks to be really well done. I was just wondering if the market and value of the items have risen or stayed. Thanks any opinions welcome!

The older hobos are very collectible. The newer stuff seen on ebay ..... not so much.

I've been trying to buy a "killer" original hobo on a 1921-S and the guy won't part with it. I'm ashamed to say what I've offered for it. Started out at 500$ over two years ago and I'm no closer to it today as I was two years ago.

The newer hobos are mostly machine engraved on undated coins. That should tell you a lot.

westernsky has it right. IMO those you have listed are really cool as pieces of art and are not unreasonably priced. If it's worth the money to you, that's your decision.

I can't see any machine marks in the pics, but maybe those were polished or photoshopped out.

The "old school" ones are worth some money and the ones done by famous people. I think there is a reference book on them you can buy.

I think there is a group called "the Original Hobo Nickel Collectors Society" (or something like that) that researches and has information about hobo nickels. You might start there for more info.

I would not consider those to be Hobo nickels. I group these carved coins into three groups Hobo nickels which were carved contemporaneously by the hobos in the 20's, 30's, and 40's. Imitation Hobo's made to look like the old Hobos, often using punches. and modern carved coins. The modern carved coins can be grouped into two further groups, crude engraving such as the three ebay lots posted, and fine art carving.

I think the Hobo nickels and the fine art carving have a future. The Imitation Hobo's and the crude modern engraving is just so much cr*p.

A couple examples of what I would call "fine art carving". Compare to the stuff in the ebay listings posted earlier.

Hi.

I teach hobo nickel carving at the ANA summer seminar. If you like the coin and the price, buy it. I only know of one person using a CNC mill to cut coins and his style is different than hand carved coins. Power assisted engraving i. e. Gravermax or Lindsay airgravers IS hand engraving. The OHNS website is hobonickels.org and they are also on facebook.

Probably should change the name to coin carvers or coin art.

Conder101, those sure are beauties that you've posted! These are comparable to the best medalic art pieces I've seen.

VanCouverIslandCoinKid ... Your use of the words "value" and "market" suggest to me that you;re viewing the Hobos from perhaps an investment perspective. If so, I'd discourage that. IMHO, it's more of an art form. Doubtless, given the money that some are paying for these works of art, , there is investment potential. I'm in accord with Condor101 that the ebay items you've posted pale in comparison to the beauties that he's posted. If you like the Hobo, buy it as art, to be treasured for years. Join the OHNS and invest your time and study. It's a very specialized area, and it'll pay you to rub elbows with the fine and knowledgeable folks who appreciate that genre. Good luck!
