I typically stay away from full red copper, but I have the opportunity to purchase the following NGC graded coins for $1200:
1881 MS64RD
1887 MS64RD
1897 MS65RD

I know these coins were bought from a complete set (raw) and recently graded after the dealer bought the set.

Does this seem like a good deal? compared to recent sales on Heritage, I think this is pretty good.

Not for me. I would take the same money and buy a key.

It sounds like a good deal but that would depend on whether or not they are accurately graded and the eye appeal.

As D0ubl3Eagle said, if they are accurately graded with eye appeal, would be a good deal. Latest price guide values:

.............NGC....Numismedia....Numismedia CAC (new feature for paid members)
1881.......425.......450...........540
1887.......525.......575...........690
1997......1110......1130..........1360
Totals... 2060......2155..........2590

Good question. I have no idea what I'd do except I am trying to acquire a full red set of those. But to pay that much at one time scares me. All full red? Then those are something you just don't get in change so maybe I'd go for that deal.

Have you seen them in hand? It seems like a good deal to me. I'm sure the dealer is making money and just flip them to move them. Where are the rest of the set? If he has any of them do they all look the same as in color.

Just because the holder says RD doesn't mean the coins haven't turned to RB or even BN, happens all the time, and none of the TPG's will cover color on copper coins in their guarantee. Make sure you have full right of return or refusal, if the coins aren't available to see in hand before the purchase.

These coins were raw until about 3 months ago. There was a full sent of 1C coins, with the 1793 (vine/bars) grading XF40 and may of the large cents grading RB. While I have not seen the coins in person, the certification numbers pull up with pretty decent pics, which gave me more pics than just the sellers. He offers a 5 day return on everything too, so I went ahead and bought them. When they arrive, I will get some pics up.

Many of the other IHCs he had listed were RB/BN. The RD ones seemed underpriced compared to the others.

I decided a while back that I won't buy Red copper anymore.
Did that because PCGS would no longer guarantee their RD color.
I assume NGC did/does the same.

I find RB coins quite satisfactory.

I got home today and picked the coins up from the Post Office. I am really quite pleased with these. They are full RED! I found these particularly difficult to photograph, esp. the 1887.

The 1881 has a small dark toning spot above the 2nd and 3rd feather tips, but has much more RED than the pictures show.

The 1887 is slightly proof like......it was a bugger to photograph. No spots, no toning, just bright RED.

The 1897 shows just a few very small toning spots on the obverse.
