Don't dismiss the Standing Liberty quarter to quick. It is possible(long shot for sure) that it could be a 1916 with the date worn off. A quick check of type1 and type2 coins would give you picks to compare. The difference is $10 or $1000 est. so it's worth a quick peek.

BadThad - Thank you. Do you know of something that give a rundown of key dates? I figure the varities will be a little more of a chore to research, but a resource for the key dates would be useful.
BLUESZONE - And thank you! I wouldn't have thought to research 'through the back door' so to speak. You know, no date = not important. Yeah, right.

Just look at the dates/mints with the high values on that numismedia link I posted earlier. Key dates are going to be the ones with much higher than average values. For example, in Walking Liberty halves, 1921 D is worth $300 even in terrible condition. 1938D is worth at least $50-75. Just look for the ones that stand out as having higher prices than the rest.

I agree with the others about separating the key dates and coins that look uncirculated or mint. They will command higher prices with collectors than just scrap bullion prices.

Most dealers, pawnshops, jewlers, etc will offer you a pm melt value for them because they will have to send them to an independant TPG company which will cost them to get a comparable value if some are in good condition I would recomend you getting them certified or you might want to just carry on your dads collection for memories throughout the years if there are some key dates & mint marks they will only keep going up in value over the years imho ! http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/price...icesgd.shtml Good luck with them.

BadToTheBone & HOLLYWOOD - Key date search in progress, but it looks like there won't be any. Guess the coin dealer went through the pieces pretty well - as would be expected - before selling the pieces as bullion. But still looking - lots of pretty, shiny ones in great condition. 52Raymo & smokeriderdon - Okay, here you go.

52Raymo - Okay, I give up. Why would you want to see a pic of a worn, no date, barely see the details quarter? There has to be some logical reason if 2 of you want to see it. The only thing I can think of is for study - but, what? (Sorry, but I see stars)

chris, the reason is there are diagnostics that will tell you if you got REALLY lucky and that is a 1916. The 1916 being one of the Holy Grails of coins. Here are pics showing those diagnostics... Clearly, given the strong rivets in the shield, the loop at the bottom of the drapes and the recess in the right hand wall, this is not a 1916.

smokeriderdon - I should have figured. Thank you for taking the time to point out the many differences, both on the '16 and the '17 SHAFTA9a - Thank you for the welcome and the nudge to keep posting. I must admit that I can't think of a better place. This is a great place for information and help. 52Raymo - Glad the photos came out so you could see something.
