One thing I haven't figured out is whether or not to send my coins to be slabbed. I showed a coin (morgan) at one shop (not my local one) and they barked it was probably a VF... I thought she was crazy. Later, I showed my local coin shop and he indicated a MS 62 or 63. These were some special coins to me (from my mom) so I sent a few to NGC for grading. I sent the 5 most toned ones because I knew for sure it wouldn't get a questionable toning statement. I just checked the website and they were graded at MS 63 (and 62). My question is this: do you have a specific grade or coin in mind before sending out for grading. Although I don't really plan on selling, I thought it would be easier for my kids if the better ones were graded. That way if they were listed on ebay, there wouldn't be that huge range of unknown. I probably lost money by sending in the Morgans I did. However, I wanted to see which assessment was right (VF or MS) and wanted to see the toned ones in a NGC case to protect it and not have anyone question if it was fake toned.

I generally use the $150 rule. If the FMV is not at least that, it stays raw.
I have sent in coins that are extremely sentimental to me and I wanted them protected the best way possible that were worth less than that, but it didn't matter.

If you wanted to see which grade was right, take some pics of the coin and upload them the grading forum. The best part is it doesn't cost a dime.

Perhaps you should have asked the person who said your coins were VF that you wanted to buy all his VF Morgans that looked just like yours!

@ Jimbucks! To Montana CMR If they were mine I would not send them in for grading. Your local dealer has shown he is truthful and willing to work with you. Work with him. There are far cheaper ways to protect a coin than slabs.

I can't get over one LCS saying VF ...another. MS ....there is a lot of difference in those two grades.
Somebody should not have a LCS....

I'll still try to post an image today or next week.
The ones I sent in had really nice toning. I now realize the only ones of my dates worth sending in are if they grade MS 64 - mine graded ms 63 at the best.
The scary thing to me is the coin shop that indicated vf DOES know what they are doing. Sad.

Hi MontanaCMR (I definitely know about your nickname!). Market value is an option. Rarity is as well. Sentimental value is a possibility as well. Another may be, if I add in the grading fees, I will still have less than market value. Of note, I picked up 7 common date Morgan dollars yesterday. ALL are, without a doubt, UNC! If they grade 63's, I break even. If one or two come back as 64's, I am money ahead. If one, in particular, comes back as 65, then I am definitely ahead in the money spent versus return on investment. So, these 7, will probably be sent into ANACS, as they have a special going on right now. 10 coins for $115, including return shipping. This lot does not contain any varieties. Granted, an MS65 graded ANACS may not garner top dollar if the coin was in a PCGS graded holder, but, cost to grade is substantially less. Regardless of the discussion FOR or AGAINST slabbing (regardless of company), every collector should know the series they have in hand. If not, welcome to Coin Community - every person here has a niche in the grading department. In my humble opinion, I also believe your first dealer is not quite on the up and up. There is a BIG difference between a VF and an MS Morgan. Buffalo nickels, now, that is another thread altogether.

I think the dealer who said VF was trying to rip you off. I wouldn't go there if I were you.

Just one of the many reasons I never keep slabbed coins. Nor do I ever send any in for grading or slabbing. Any coins I get in a slab, I break out and put in Albums. Just don't like a pile of plastic. I want to see all the coins from a set and not have to go looking for one coin somewhere else. And as long as the coins are mine, I really don't care who says VF, MS or anything else. If I like them, that's all that is important to me.

with just carl. I crack them out and in the Dansco they go. Slabbed coins get so lonely, no other coins near them just a plastic shell. poor little things. I just do not like the slabs, I much prefer to see my coins in albums or the notebook pages for the series that do not have albums.
