One of my website visitors sent me these photos. I told her that this looks like a token from the Civil War. I'm sure there are Coin Community Forum members out there who are experts on this topic.

Does anyone have information to offer? Anything you can tell us would be appreciated.

Unless it's a counterfeit I believe so.

There were a LOT of business made their own money (tokens) during the civil war due to a huge shortage of coinage. There are quite a number of tokens still out there but MANY are quite rare, say less than 200 known and quite a few are far less than that. The token you are showing is one I have never seen before so I would take the time to do a little research into that token. Never know, may be what the pros would call, UNIQUE, which goes beyond rare! Thanks for the opportunity to see the token and lets us all know if you locate any more info!

It looks like a Patriotic CWT-274 which has a rarity rating of 6, meaning that 13-30 specimens survive. In my opinion, yours grades EF details with corrosion which would net grade at VF. The value shown in the 4th edition Rulau book is $125.

Thanks to everyone who has chimed in.

Susan, can you explain a little more what Patriotic CWT-274 indicates? Is this some sort of catalog number, or a classification of some kind, or what?

CWT is Civil War Token. 274 is the Patriotic die number. I got this information from the Krause publication Standard Catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1900 4th Edition by Russell Rulau.

While I have this book and can research items, US tokens are not a specialty of mine, so this is the extent of my knowledge. Wish I could help more.
