My local coin shop called and said they just got this coin in. I don't know anything about these types of coin, but love the sundial on it. Do any of you collect this type of coin. Given the high price, do you see it increasing, or decreasing in value. The PCGS website shows $2,200. The coin shop is asking much less. I don't know if I should make this my one "rare" coin instead of mostly Kookaburra and mickey mouse steamboat willie. Any advice, suggestions, or experience with these coins would be appreciated.

Check your Red Book. Make sure it is real and not a fake/repo. John1

It is in a pcgs slab, so I don't really know how to tell if it is real. Because of this issue, and lack of knowledge, I will probably let it go. I do trust our coin shop. The last Morgan I showed him, he saiid MS63, and they just arrived from NGC as MS63
Thanks for the quick reply.

I've owned a few but not that high of a grade. If it's problem free which I suppose it is, as suggested, under $2K should be a pretty fair price.

I collect old copper and have several Fugios but of lesser grade. It's a classic coin designed by Benjamin Franklin. I'd buy it but that's just me.

IMO, if you are seriously considering buying this coin, a fair price to pay would be $1500.

I think he is asking $1,700. Being new to coins, I wonder how my kids (I don't plan to) would ever sell the coin. Would you get this over the 2009 high relief gold double eagle? It's in a PCGS container, but would the coin shop have to do additional research to determine if real? I think he knew the person selling it, and may have originally sent it to him. Would you trade three rolls of ASE for it? Yikes. I probably need to decide tonight.

Without hesitation! However I, personally, loathe modern *ahem* coins.... Quote: It's in a PCGS container, but would the coin shop have to do additional research to determine if real? Not likely.....

Quote:Would you trade three rolls of ASE for it? Definitely if there are 20 coins per roll, probably if there are 25 coins per roll. Rebuilding the three rolls over time is easy. Coming up with the lump sum to buy such a coin as the Fugio, if you could even find it, is much tougher.

$1700 doesn't sound like a bad price after looking at what they have brought at auction but will depend on how the coin looks. If the coin has large planchet flaws, then maybe not so good.

Thanks for the feedback, and posting the picture. It is a great coin. I might wait until I have more experience (more than two months) and decide on an area of collecting.
Ugg, or maybe I will pick it up tomorrow. While I do some coin collecting for fun, and some because the price of silver seems low. I wonder if right now, having rolls of silver that can be sold in 5 years to buy this coin would make more sense.

$1700 is a very fair price if the eye appeal is there. There are fake Chinese PCGS slabs but none with Fugios as of yet. It probably won't happen as Colonials are a very small collector base and not as popular.

If you like it buy it. Silver is readily available and always will be, whereas early colonials are scarce and always will be. If you do pick it up, post a pic, and I would suggest sending it to CAC.
Best of luck.

I say buy it! I love the early colonials, and would love to add a Fugio cent to my collection.
If concerned about authenticity, you can verify the certification number at the PCGS website.
