I've been collecting for years but I think I may have stumbled upon something. Please help me if anyone is kind enough for the new guy in the forum. The coin is a 1999 Delaware State Quarter. I took it to jewler and it does not appear to be plated.

Jeweler said it doesn't look plated and if it was he saw no markings. The initial weight was 5.87 grams. The following are some more pics. Thanks admin for moving this ..

Quarters should weigh closer to 5.7 grams ( http://www.coincommunity.com/us_qua...rs/state.asp )

The quarter is plated.

I'm looking for ideas of the wrong planchette being used. The weight is in line for this to be a plausible direction to direct the discussion. I don't think plating would add that much weight.

The members here are knowledgeable and have seen a fair number of plated coins.

What you have is a uncirculated quarter that was plated by a private company, put in a set with the other 4 quarters for that year and sold on tv for an astronomical sum to the masses as a collectible. There are coins plated in gold, silver or platinum. The plating is thin enough that it adds to the weight of the coin but not enough where the precious metal is recoverable.

Pics are a bit blurry but now does look more golden then copper. Odds are it is plated in gold or has just toned a nice gold color but I don't think it is an error coin.

Home shopping network sold a lot of gold plated quarters ... When they come into
the local coin shops they give them out as change.

A neighbor of mine went to DC and Philadelphia on vacation this summer, took the mint tour.
They brought me a gold plated State Quarter ....I did not know the mint sold them
until a few weeks ago ...

I think you have a gold plated quarter. As others have posted ... Weigh it
