Sent by registered mail from the UK in early October, this package disappeared from tracking at the handoff from UK to US. Royal Mail says the package was handed off to the overseas carrier; USPS does not recognize the tracking number. It's still a week too early for Royal Mail to open an investigation but I don't have a good feeling about this. If you see it for sale somewhere please let me know.

I recently had a small package go missing from the UK, it's lost in space somewhere. Not near as nice or as valuable as yours, but still annoying none the less. I hope yours shows up. Keep your fingers crossed.

Registered mail moves v e r y s l o w l y. Give it at least 30 days before declaring it lost. I'd be concerned but not in a panic mode (yet!).

Over the years I have lost a total of 3 packages a total of 6 coins. 4 from the UK and one from Thailand. In one instance my 4 English pennies never made it out of the UK. The other two times the coins seemed to disappear upon arrival after clearing customs, both times at the Kerney, NJ sort facility. The postmaster told me Kerney, NJ is a blackhole and the chance of recovery was less than 70%. How they got that figure I have no idea but in a nutshell I never got my coin. I surely hope you get yours, that can't be cheap.

Not a nice feeling, but "where there's life, there's hope." There is time. As WS says, the 'Registered' mail system does move very slowly especially country to country. My usual from the U.S. to Australia is 12 to 14 days, but sometimes up to 35 days, (5 weeks). Sometimes 'lost' mail has turned up 7 MONTHS later, by the date stamp, but with no further comment? Fingers crossed for you, TIF. All will be well.

I had one coin shipped from the Netherlands that was opened and held by US Customs for a month and a half last year. When I finally got it the package was open and resealed with US Customs tape. At least I did get it.

I shipped some coins to Chile once. They got to him 2 Months after I sent them. I was getting really concerned. Yeah, give this one more time. You should be ok.

Echizento-- were you aware of where the coin was during that time (was it trackable) or did it just show up out of the blue?
While I certainly understand that some packages get lost (usually temporarily), I'm a little more concerned about this one since it was sent as a registered package. That means that each step of the way, every person handling the coin has to log the contact. It will be interesting to see what Royal Mail turns up if it hasn't arrived by November 11. It seems like the handoff from one country to another is a vulnerable time.
Last week I received coin from Europe. The package had been opened and resealed by US Customs but there was no significant delay in its transit.

Everyone/anyone: the packages you've had personal experience with (in terms of delays), were any of them *registered* packages?

All of the ones mentioned were registered and trackable. At some point it doesn't update or somehow goes 'invalid'.

No I had no idea, I assumed it was lost. It just showed up one day wrapped with US Customs tape without any indication where it was held. Most likely it was at the Port of Entry which is JFK and when they release it, it made it's way here to Washington state.

Thanks, Nate and everyone! That is reassuring. Frankly, I'm surprised that more of my packages haven't gone missing. Hopefully this one will show up at some point.

In my opinion custom clearance is where any letter/package can get stuck, personally had a small package from Europe stuck in Australian customs (at the mail clearance centre) for over 4 months one time. And another time a registered letter for nearly 3 months (and no agency was prepared to say anything). So I hope yours turns up either soon or eventually (if you were so unlucky that your item got selected for inspection).

On Friday, in my mail, I had a letter for the people next door, and one for the people two houses away. Unfortunately this happens too often for my peace of mind, but most people ARE honest and will put it in your box (as I did), or 'post' it again.
To answer your question, ALL of the mail referred to (by me) previously was 'Registered' but not always 'Trackable' as somehow from the UK SOME postage is not 'Trackable' after it leaves the UK border.
We do however hear the 'horror' stories of bags of mail found in mail exchanges years after they arrived. One presumes the items are then sent on their way.
I still feel good about this.

I've had a parcel from the US arrive after some 59 days (by the date on the notice I got in the mailbox). I've recently reviewed the tracking number - turned out they still keep the data two years later - and apparently the tracking records it as arriving at my post office less than two weeks after being sent... no idea what happened for the next six (and no wonder it took so long to find when I finally arrived to claim it, a further week later). I've had another case where the notice date was plausible, but the notice itself didn't enter my mailbox until 27 days later. Was pretty much a mad dash to claim it in the closing post (I've heard somewhere that they only keep parcels for 30 days; I have no idea if that's true, but I didn't want to risk it). It's all hit-and-miss - other parcels arrived normally (and I've never found out just what was up with my Secret Santa gift last year).
I've heard of a particularly horrific story where someone finally got the notice in their mailbox the day the post office forwarded the item as undelivered. No idea what exactly happened later.
