At my lcs today, and he had a large variety of poor condition and problem Barber dimes. Some examples would be. An ag3 problem free 1903 s dime for $10. He had 4 1896 o dimes at $20 each, and a corroded 1904 s for $6. He had almost every date in thes find of conditions. Am I crazy for not buying these?

Set your standard and follow it.
Forget just hole-filling (unless that's what you want to do).
If you want VF or better then ignore grades lower than that.

If you buy a lesser coin you might end up like me saying, "Why did I buy this?"

Totally agree with Kanga. Coins you regret buying just end up haunting you...until you sell them and usually lose money because you just want it gone. I personally will try and tackle te key dates first and make them QUALITY coins like VF35 or above, as they tend to be the focal point of the set.

Just my humble opinion, good luck with your set!

When in doubt, don't do it.

You will sleep better that night and feel better the next day.

For a flip? I snag a Key at any price I think I can turn for a realistic profit.

Exactly what I do

I take into account problem factors and pay accordingly.

If I can afford a coin for the price given, and I probably couldn't afford a better/problem-free example, I take it. (Well, I take it as long as it's not too ugly... and even then I might still take it if I think I'd be able to sell it later!)
That said, I'm not normally interested in key dates, so it's more like rare types (you should've seen my 1728 cross kopek... or my Shield nickel for that matter).

I'd make absolute sure I understood the market for that series and the trends and how long it will take to sell likely and that I'm not missing anything and it's really the deal I think but if I was confident I could flip it for a profit that I consider worth my while within a reasonable time frame the only thing limiting my spending would be my funds currently available.
In this specific case it's probably a bit of a gamble on some of them he has once you take time and various fee's and such into consideration when calculating your expense to profit ratio but it does sound like some of them may have decent chunks of meat on the bone still.

Good post. I agree completely. Nothing at all wrong with a fair and profitable flip but some due diligence is a must.

I do a lot of buying and selling, with firearms, militaria and coins, and I think what stopped me yesterday is a rule I have always had for myself.
Don't buy something you don't want to get stuck with!

@damcon3 That is a good rule and it sounds like you followed it. Never doubt yourself when you follow your own rules. (L know it is hard sometimes)

@ Coincollector2000 Let me now if you find some of them!
