I was thinking of getting my niece and nephew the ES2 Silver Uncirculated ASE for Christmas but then I looked more into what the mint offers and found the XA6 Uncirculated Dollar Set which is only $1 more but comes with five Presidential dollar coins. Is the ASE the same in both sets? If it is, why on earth would anyone buy the ES2 set? Even if you have no interest in the Presidential dollars you can just spend them at face and come in at $4 less than the ES2 price. Thoughts?

I think you are right. The ES2 comes in a nicer presentation box vs a flat cardboard folder, so maybe that's what you get instead of 5 $1 coins?

Personally I've never understood why you'd buy ASE from the mint when bullion dealers sell them for a couple bucks over silver melt anyway.

The bullion dealers are selling you just that - bullion ASEs. The ones we buy direct from are different coins and are numismatic offerings. If the difference is negligible to you or not important to you, then by all means, buy the bullion versions and save your money.

As far as the ES2 vs XA6, yeah, not sure why the price differential. From a price perspective, XA6 is the way to go if you just are looking for the coin itself.

What is the difference between a West Point uncirculated from the mint and a West Point uncirculated from APMEX?

the one you are referring to tkbslc is the bullion grade coin, not the Uncirculated grade coin from the mint. The US Mint version is higher quality and has a different finish to it.

I actually did not know that, thanks.

So are we sure the coin in the 6-coin dollar set is not just the bullion coin? The ES2 actually says "collector's version" and the description for the XA6 never uses that phrase.

That was the point of my original posting. I was hoping someone would chime in and say if there was a difference. The mint however doesn't have a history of selling the bullion grade coin through their services, so it is unlikely it is the bullion grade coin.

description on the 6 coin set mentions a mint mark and the bullion coins have no mint mark, apparently.

Yes....the mint mark says it all...I cant believe I missed that. Looks like the Dollar Coin Set is the far and away winner.
