Strange day at work yesterday. I'm a cashier. Got an Ike from a customer. Unusual, but not unprecedented. I didn't open any rolls of coins all shift, but my nickels just "felt" weird. I checked them all, about 50 coins, and found 5 1954d, and one each of 41P, 42P, 56P, 57D, and 58P. Highly irregular.

Got a 96 Kennedy in unc, an Illinois quarter in gem P mint, a Samoa quarter, 2 2009 P Sacagawea dollars as well as a circ 2000D and 2001P Sacagawea. What was interesting as I went through the till is the dollar coins were from the D mint, not a common find on the east coast. I did not take any as I have too many already. It pays to talk coins to a cashier. They are saving all the unusual for me to go through. Last week I got a star $100 bill. I do not know much about their value. Any ideas out there? Alan |

Today, Guam-D and Samoa-D Quarters, and a BU 2009-D LP1 Cent!  So far I've received seven BU 2009-P Native American dollars in 'circulation' (from machines that dispense 26.5mm Dollars as change). Normally, every modern Dollar coin I get from a changer in Denver is going to be a "D" (except for some year-2000 Sac's and SBA's). I figure that these 2009-P's must be 'direct ship' coins. I had to explain 'direct ship' to a co-worker who was wondering about the BU 2009-P Sac's that she got in her Light Rail change. Even the most casual novice collectors in Denver know that a brand new BU "P" coin in your change is usually "impossible"...  Edited by DNA

My bank here on base had unc rolls of these 2009-P Native American dollars , quite a few I guess. I picked up a roll, the lady said the guy brought in almost 3,000 dollars worth of them. Not to get off topic but I have some Native American dollars and some Presidential dollars that have the upside down lettering on the edge, is that significant? Also picked up an AU Kennedy half 1967 the same day, I was actually dumping some change I went though...a process I need to refine. |

Concerning the orientation of the edge lettering ... the coins are fed into the roller press without regard to orientation. Theoretically that means 50% will be one way and 50% the other. There is no premium for these or variety designation.

Thanks for the reply. I got to reading this monster thread, some cool finds. Which got me to thinking, we have a snack bar in my shop for the pilots and I get to go through the change when its slow. So far have found 3 silver quarters (2 in the same money jar)a silver dime, a silver nickel, all but completed my State Quarter collection, a new Hampshire quarter with no visible mint-mark all over the last 3 years....today with my Lupe found quite a few errors, not sure on the significance. one of the better one is a Connecticut quarter with Connecticut DD, a 98 quarter with a DD motto and some nickels with some filled letters, any thoughts? |

Matt, There are too many modern errors and varieties to list them all here. I'd recommend a visit to the CONECA site for a list of recent modern error finds http://www.conecaonline.org/Next, visit our site http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...p?FORUM_ID=5 for discussions on member finds. If you can take some decent pictures, post them there and see what the experts have to say. Be forewarned that a lot of doubling is mechanical (created by the minting process) and not on the die itself. Mechanical Doubling carries no premium. |

We just completed a 6,100 mile road trip back east. Furthest point we went was to Maine. I kept all the change we received, and mostly it was P mint -- something we seldom see in western Colorado. Among the "keepers" were several of the newest Territorial quarters.

Gary, I do the same thing when I go out west...save the D mint coins! We just don't see them on the east coast, so I save them knowing that they are not rare just rare to here!!

That's strange since I see D mint coins all the time. But since I'm smack dab in the middle of Manhattan, I guess I can thank the tourists for that...

I am in DC suburbs, and a D is one I keep for my collection just in case I do not have one in my circulated sets. We get our share of tourists too, but maybe downtown there are more. 30 minutes away it can be weeks before I see a D mint coin. I went to Indy this summer and the Ds where everywhere. I kept them as it is hard to give up something you don't see often....and I know they are common to boot!

A silver bonanza at work yesterday. A customer gave me 3 silver quarters as part of a gas purchase - 45, 62, and 64. Another gave me a 44D War Nickel! Joe |
